It's October and finally time for Halloween, and do you know where to look for costume inspiration? Look no further than some of the strongest female superheroes.

In the age of the mega blockbusters from Marvel Studios, and the slow (and sometimes not so successful) rise of DC Comics Studios, superheroes have never been so in the forefront of media. From the very first female superhero EVER in comics (and no, it’s actually not Wonder Woman), to the incredible diversity that has come about in these superheroes, there are a lot of different inspirational feminist heroes for young women, and even the working girl, to look up to.

The first female superhero premiered in February 1940 under the name of Fantomah. She may have been a backup feature, but she paved the way to one of the oldest and most iconic superheroes ever, Wonder Woman.

Since then, there has been a rise and fall in female superheroes. They went from being incredibly strong and independent, to love interests to their male counterparts. Now, they dominate the comic scene as well as the big screen.

One of the best moments in superhero cinema is that epic montage of all of the female superheroes defending the Infinity Gauntlet in Avengers: Endgame. I want to share with you all the amazing women of the comic universe, so here’s a comprehensive list of some famous female superhero costumes and not so famous comic women to dress up as for Halloween (or your next Comic-Con).

1. Captain Marvel

Although this helm was originally taken up by a male Mar-Vell, you probably know this superhero better as Carol Danvers, also known on Kree as Vers. In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, she’s a fighter pilot that absorbs immense power when a generator powered by the Tesseract exploded, making her the most powerful superhero in the MCU.

2. Wonder Woman

You can’t have a list of female superheroes, or just superheroes in general without Wonder Woman. First appearing in 1941, Princess Diana of Themyscira is a powerful force to be reckoned with. She is one of the founding members of the Justice League in the DC Comics universe along with Superman and Batman.

3. Scarlet witch

First appearing in 1964, she was originally designed to be the villainous daughter of Magneto, along with her twin brother QuickSilver, and they became founding members of the Brotherhood of Mutants. She’s been retrofitted into the MCU instead of the X-Men franchise, turning into Wanda, a girl kidnapped and tested on with one of the Infinity Stones and is accidentally given immense power.

4. Gamora

Gamora was first introduced in 1975, and her backstory has stayed the same throughout. She’s the adopted daughter of Thanos trained to be an assassin, but now rides with the Guardians of the Galaxy in the MCU.

5. Black widow

Natasha Romanov is the Russian assassin that helps to establish the original group of Avengers. Appearing for the first time in 1964, she will now be the second female superhero in the MCU to get her own movie, even if it is just a prequel.

6. Shuri

Shuri is the younger sister to T’Challa, also known by the alias of The Black Panther. Her tech savvy skills makes even Bruce Banner and Tony Stark feel mediocre. Plus, her designs makes her and her brother look ready to fight their enemies in modern times while still paying homage to their roots.

7. Supergirl

An iconic and traditional superhero from DC, she has had many iterations, but the most popular one is Kara Zor-El, the cousin to the famous Superman. You can see her in action on the small screen on the CW show of the same name.

If you haven’t seen Wolverine, please go do that right now. Introduced in 2003, X-23 is the clone, and later adopted daughter, of Wolverine (aka Logan). She was designed to be the perfect killing machine, and she eventually takes up the Helm of Wolverine in the comics

9. The Wasp

This helm has been taken up by both Janet and Hope Van Dyne, the wife and daughter of Hank Pym, also known as Yellowjacket. Originally released in 1963, she’s been featured alongside Scott Lange and Ant-Man and the Wasp in the MCU.

10. Katana

This antihero from the DC lineup is a Japanese superhero wielding a Katana that traps the souls of whoever it kills inside of it. She is now part of the Suicide Squad lineup, but originally appeared in 1983.

Another DC staple, Raven is the daughter of a human woman and a demo from the dimension Azarath. She’s best known as a character from Teen Titans, both the comic and the show. Also, she’s probably my favorite character.

Fun fact, in the comics, Jessica Jones went to school with Peter Parker, and her dad worked for Tony Stark (established 2001)! This ex-superhero turned investigator can be seen on her own show on Netflix, Jessica Jones, and in Defenders alongside her husband Luke Cage.

14. She-Hulk

Jennifer Walters is the sassy cousin to Bruce Banner. After getting injured, she needed a blood transfusion from him, causing her to become She-Hulk in 1980. Now, her transformation is permanent, and she retains her personality and self control all the time.

I met this character through the Deadpool series, but oh my goodness she is so different in the comics. I would get into it, but in reality it would take me a whole separate article to do so. In the MCU, she’s a student at Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters and is being mentored by Colossus.

17. Jean Grey
