A recent stunt by Aaron Rodgers and Sauce Gardner has led to plenty of jokes from the NFL community, as well as some fairly serious backlash.

The pair have been close friends ever since Rodgers joined the New York Jets and, on Tuesday, a photographer for NJ.com managed to capture the pair doing a pre-match handshake and greeting.

A colleague of the photographer, Andy Vasquez, tried to explain what they did by suggesting it was "chapstick related".

However, many people on Twitter thought otherwise, claiming they were pretending to smoke weed.

"Better be safe than sorry and give them boys a drugs test," wrote one user.

Many others had much harsher words for Rodgers and Gardner, with one Twitter user saying they felt "disgusted" and that the pair "should be suspended".

Others pointed out that they are supposed to be role models and that they weren't setting a good example.

Rodgers once explained to Aubrey Marcus that he attributes some past successes with consuming ayahuasca in South America.

"My intention the first night going in was I want to feel what pure love is," he said.

"That was my intention and I did. I really did.

"I had a magical experience with the sensation of feeling 100 different hands on my body imparting a blessing of love and forgiveness for myself and gratitude for this life from what seemed to be my ancestors.

"That's what ayahuasca did for me, was help me see how to unconditionally love myself.

"It's only in that unconditional self-love, that then I'm able to truly, unconditionally love others.

"And what better way to work on my mental health than to have an experience like that?"
