Alan Rufus was a companion of William the Conqueror during the Norman Conquest of England. He was the 1st Lord of Richmond and the second son of Euozen Penteur. Rufus was given the “Honor of Richmond” by William the Conqueror and started construction on the Richmond Castle in 1071, where he served as the first constable.
By 1086, he was one of the richest and most powerful men in England and was mentioned in the Domesday book as Alan the holder of carucate. Rufus was the leader of England’s Bretons and donated large sums of money to religious organizations, including founding the Benedictine St. Mary’s Abbey in 1088.
