Lopez was born in Tepetitan, Tabasco, Mexico in November 1953. He is a member of the National Regeneration Movement party and was formerly a member of other parties such as the Institutional Revolutionary party and the Democratic Revolution party.

He graduated from the National Autonomous University of Mexico and has been married twice, including to Beatriz Gutierrez Muller since 2006. He has four children.

Andres Manuel Lopez served as the President of the Party of the Democratic Revolution from 1996 to 1999 and was the Head of Government of the Federal District from 2000 to 2005. He ran in the 2006 presidential election and lost by 0.58%, and then ran in 2012 and finished second. He began serving as the President of Mexico in 2018.
