Pelicans broadcaster Sean Kelley announced the team has decided to shut down Davis for the remainder of the 2015-16 season.

Jennifer Hale of Fox Sports reported Davis will undergo surgery to repair a torn labrum in his left shoulder and will also have a knee operation.

Gentry Comments on Davis' Injuries

"Obviously he has an injury on his knee and something with his shoulder," head coach Alvin Gentry said, per John Reid of NOLA.com. "I think they are going to talk to doctors this afternoon and we'll know a lot more then." 

"I wouldn't say no to that," Gentry said when asked at the time if the Pelicans would be more inclined to end Davis' season, per Reid. "I think we got to be smart collectively, along with him. Like I said, I think we'll know a lot more after they talk to doctors today."

Pelicans Wise to Be Cautious with Davis

New Orleans' leading scorer and rebounder at 24.3 points and 10.3 rebounds per game, Davis had missed seven games already this year due to various injuries prior to being shut down.

The three-time All-Star returned to the lineup on March 2 against the Houston Rockets after his most recent one-game hiatus, but his presence did not keep New Orleans from falling further behind in the Western Conference playoff race. Following Friday's game, which was Davis' last, the Pelicans had lost eight of 10 games since Davis' return.

There's no denying what Davis provides the Pelicans. He is New Orleans' best scorer, rebounder and rim-protector. Given that the Pelicans are well outside the playoff picture, taking a conservative approach with their superstar and looking forward to next year is best for Davis and the franchise.
