TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Mild stroke or 'mini-stroke', also known as a transient ischemic attack (TIA), is a condition of temporary dysfunction of the blood flow in the brain which causes symptoms similar to a stroke that lasts for minutes or hours. Despite its name, this condition should not be ignored, since it could be a sign of a bigger risk for stroke. To better understand TIA, it is necessary to know and be aware of the risk factors that could cause it.

1. Blockage in your blood flow

Mild stroke is caused by a temporary disruption in the blood flow which can be caused by a blood clot or atherosclerosis plaque in the blood vessel. This disruption can block the blood and oxygen from appropriately entering the brain which can cause difficulty to talk, weakness, and numbness.

2. Health risk 

There are many risk factors to cause a mini-stroke. Such as hypertension, high cholesterol level, diabetes, obesity, and smoking. An unhealthy lifestyle such as unhealthy dietary habits and lack of physical exercise could also increase the risk factor for TIA.

3. Arrhythmia

Arrhythmia or irregular heartbeat can cause TIA since it could form a blood clot in the heart. The blood clot could travel to the brain and cause TIA.

4. Family history

A family with a history of stroke or TIA can increase the risk of other family members getting a stroke. People with familial stroke must consult with a doctor for their own risk.

5. Age factor

People of all ages can be subject to TIA, however, older people are more at risk.

6. Cardiovascular disease

Cardiovascular diseases such as coronary arteries can increase the risk of TIA since it could form blood clots. 

Sometimes, the symptoms of TIA can naturally subside. However, TIA is still an early warning of a much bigger problem. It is important to note that people with TIA increase the risk factor for stroke. Doctors could evaluate your health to determine the cause and further steps to reduce the risk of stroke in the future.

However, you can prevent the risk of TIA stroke by adopting a healthy lifestyle, observing your health gradually, and avoiding smoking.
