Not many city centre hostels have a pool, but the Beach House, slap bang in the centre of Ipanema, offers a lovely palm-shaded garden with plunge pool where young backpackers from all walks of life gather to socialise. Guests may pay a premium for this, but nothing beats a cool dip on a sweaty summer’s day.
