Bears Rumors: Matt Eberflus Expected to Return for 2024 Despite Early Hot-Seat Buzz | News, Scores, Highlights, Stats, and Rumors
Jessica Wood Matt Eberflus is reportedly in line to return for his third season as the Chicago Bears' head coach in 2024.
According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, there were rumblings about Eberflus being on the hot seat earlier in the season, but with Chicago winning four of its past five games, it appears as though he will be back in the fold next season.
Schefter noted that since the Bears have gone through a great deal of change in recent years, including having four different head coaches over the past decade, they would like to have some stability moving forward.
The Bears went a league-worst 3-14 during Eberflus' first year at the helm, but that poor season could have potentially helped turn the franchise around.
Chicago owned the first overall pick in the 2023 NFL draft before trading it to the Carolina Panthers for wide receiver D.J. Moore and a bevy of draft picks, including a selection that turned out to be the No. 1 pick in the 2024 NFL draft since the Panthers were the worst team in the NFL this season.
In his first season under Eberflus, Moore enjoyed a career year, reeling in 92 receptions for 1,300 yards and eight touchdowns with one game to go. He became the clear preferred target of quarterback Justin Fields, who has given the Bears' brass a tough decision to make this offseason.
Chicago can either keep Fields for a fourth season and see if he continues to progress or use the No. 1 overall pick to select a new franchise quarterback such as USC's Caleb Williams, North Carolina's Drake Maye or LSU's Jayden Daniels.
If the Bears keep Fields, they can trade the No. 1 overall pick for a second year in a row, stockpile more picks and potentially still select a stud at another position like Ohio State wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. to pair with Moore and Fields.
Continuity may be the best thing for the Bears, especially with how well they have played down the stretch after an 0-4 and 2-7 start to the season.
Perhaps the Bears' showing in the final game of the 2023 regular season against the rival Green Bay Packers will play a role in whether team president Kevin Warren decides to keep Eberflus.
With a win, the Bears can essentially eliminate the hated Packers from the playoffs unless several other results go in Green Bay's favor.
Also, it would give the Bears a respectable 8-9 record, and their first season with eight wins or more since 2020.
Per Dianna Russini of The Athletic, the decision of whether to keep or fire Eberflus will essentially be Warren's to make, and while he recently said he likes the "energy" around the team, he hasn't indicated what he will do one way or the other.
Russini added that Warren has been described as "methodical," and given that he has thoroughly evaluated the team throughout the season, she doesn't expect to result of Sunday's game to have a huge impact on his decision.
Regardless of what happens Sunday, the Bears have shown marked improvement in all facets during their second season under Eberflus, and the next step could be a return to the playoffs next season.
