Brandon Marshall, Bears Comment on WR's Twitter Argument with Fan | News, Scores, Highlights, Stats, and Rumors
Daniel Foster One day after engaging in a war of words with a Detroit Lions fan on Twitter, Chicago Bears wide receiver Brandon Marshall is downplaying the incident.
As seen in this series of tweets courtesy of Marshall's Twitter account, he challenged the Lions fan to a boxing match:
Brandon Marshall @BMarshall@AnthonyGKalla If I lose I'll give you another 10k. If I win you have to serve a 100 hours at an orphanage. Deal?
Brandon Marshall @BMarshall"@AnthonyGKalla: @BMarshall that's it? Cmon brandy make it 25 and we can do it in Detroit" 25 it is. Ha! You thought i wouldn't say yes.
Marshall eventually sent out another tweet suggesting that the boxing challenge was simply a joke:
Brandon Marshall @BMarshallLooks like people took my boxing match for charity too serious. #chill
According to Dan Wiederer of the Chicago Tribune, Marshall claims that the exchange was meant to draw attention to an anti-bullying campaign:
Dan Wiederer @danwiedererMarshall said his playground-style back-and-forth on Twitter w a Lions fans was his way to launch an anti-bullying campaign.
The 30-year-old wideout also revealed that Bears general manager Phil Emery frowned upon the notion of his star pass-catcher stepping in the boxing ring, per ESPN.com's Jeff Dickerson:
Jeff Dickerson @DickersonESPNBrandon Marshall says Twitter fight is overblown, although he told us Phil Emery instructed him to read his contract regarding boxing.
In addition to that, Bears head coach Marc Trestman made it clear that the team would discuss the distraction with Marshall:
Chicago Bears @ChicagoBears#Bears coach Trestman on Brandon Marshall challenging a fan on Twitter to a boxing match: "The No. 1 thing is that it wll be addressed."
The Bears are currently a disappointing 3-6 after getting dismantled by the rival Green Bay Packers in Week 10, and it is quite obvious that the organization isn't interested in additional bad publicity.
Chicago has a huge game on tap against the Minnesota Vikings in Week 11, and it needs to have 100 percent focus or else it risks a loss and the virtual end of its playoff hopes.
Marshall is on pace for one of his worst seasons with just 42 catches for 496 yards, and the added Twitter controversy certainly isn't helping his cause.
