Jessica Wood The viral altercation involving former NFL star Cam Newton followed a "heated game" Saturday between the 7-on-7 team he oversees and an opposing team, according to one of the event's organizers.
Nehemiah Mitchell, who co-founded We Ball Sports, called it "an unfortunate situation" in an interview with The Athletic's Lukas Weese and Joseph Person.
Videos surfaced Sunday of Newton fighting two coaches from TopShelf Performance, an Atlanta-based training facility that had teams taking part in the youth football showcase.

Mitchell told Weese and Person that a TopShelf team earned a victory over C1N, Newton's squad, the day before the fight in a game that had loads of trash talk.
Weese and Person shared a statement from Stephon and TJ Brown, who are trainers and coaches for TopShelf: "We are deeply concerned about the recent incident involving Cam Newton, and our thoughts are with all parties affected. Violence has no place in our community, and we strongly condemn any form of aggression."
"Cam jumps out of his car and yells, 'Hey, all that sorry s--t ain't gonna work today. What we betting today? What we betting?' I'm like, 'I ain't betting you, bro. I already beat you three, four times. You got to beat me first.' He like, 'What we betting? I got plenty of money. I ain't ever running out of money.' That's when I told him, 'That's your problem. All you care about is money. You think money is everything. You can't buy me.' And I walk off."
Newton, per TJ, also made comments during a game.
"Hey, I know that play," Newton said, per TJ. "That's my stuff. I taught y'all everything y'all know. I'm y'all daddy. I made y'all. I'm the reason for everything y'all got going on."
According to TJ, Newton grabbed Stephon after the coaches confronted the former NFL star, leading to the brawl.
Newton's representatives declined to provide comment before The Athletic's report was published.
The 34-year-old spent 11 seasons in the NFL as a player, last suiting up for the Carolina Panthers in January 2022. He began shifting his focus toward youth football in 2021 through his foundation.
C1N prevailed in the 7-on-7 tournament for players 15 and under over the weekend.
