Casa San Agustin Hotel Review, Cartagena, Colombia
Andrew Mccoy A destination in it’s own right, Alma restaurant is one of the best places to eat in Cartagena. An elegantly decorated space that is often redesigned to reflect the changing seasons, it focuses on serving the local speciality: seafood. Choose to dine in the cool interior or in the colonial courtyard, both softly lit with intimate vibes.
Start with one of the fresh, tangy Ceviche dishes (from 29 Colombian Pesos/£7) – on the chef’s recommendation – and with multiple combinations of ingredients such as octopus, shrimp, tigers milk and roasted arepa, there’s no shortage of choice. The Cartagena-style seafood chowder (60 Colombian Pesos/£15) is the ultimate choice for a main; a glorious medley of lobster, shrimp, octopus, prawns and mussels, it’s salty seafood taste permeating the coconut milk and oozing over the fluffy rice.
Breakfast is a well attended spread of freshly baked pastries and the necessary toppings, cold cuts, cheese of multiple varieties, various flavours of juice and the extra indulgence of champagne. The à la carte menu fills any gaps with eggs Benedict, eggs Florentine, avocado on toast and Full English among other choices.
