Chance The Rapper wears the number 3 on his hat for three special reasons Tue 5 December 2023 05:55 Celine Byford
Sarah Rodriguez Chance The Rapper always wears the number 3 on his hat, and the meaning behind it is truly special. The Voice former judge is officially back to provide his insight to talented singers on the NBC contest, but we just cannot stop looking at that number. He’s now fulfilling the role of mentor.
The popular music artist has made his return to The Voice season 24 ahead of his season 25 coach duties to mentor the current top 12 artists. From the Top 12, only nine will make it to the semi-finals, and then five artists will head into the live finale — with, of course, only one being crowned winner of the season.
Who is Chance on The Voice?
Chance The Rapper is a former judge on The Voice who is returning for season 25. He has briefly returned ahead of his comeback as a mentor, but his everyday career involves being a music artist.
Aside from being a new coach, Chance is currently working on a project titled The Star Line Gallery, where recording artists create 12 to 15 songs and find one artist to collaborate with for an album.
The rapper and singer-songwriter, whose real name is Chancelor Johnathan Bennett, released his debut mixtape 10 Day in 2012. He gained more fame in 2013 after releasing his second mixtape, Acid Rap.
Why does Chance The Rapper wear 3?
The number 3 is a throwback to Chance The Rapper’s third mixtape, Coloring Book. His third release was an important one, and Chance the Rapper took home the Grammy for Best Rap Album in 2017!
Chance’s mixtape came out in 2016. He told GQ: “I wanted to put something else on the hat. And so I decided to do ‘3’. I just thought that that made the most sense because it was the third project.”
The hat also has a sentimental meaning.
“I’ve rationalized it to myself that it stands for the third mixtape, the holy trinity, and the three-pronged family of myself, my daughter, and my girl,” he revealed.
Throwback to the special moment
In the first week of releasing Chance’s third mixtape, Coloring Book was streamed over 57.3 million times, which was equivalent to 38,000 units sold, debuting at number eight on the US Billboard 200 chart.
It became the first release to chart solely on streams! Promoted as Chance 3, the rapper went on to perform at the 59th annual Grammy Awards, receiving 7 nominations and winning 3 Grammys.
One of those awards was for Best New Artist, which was the first such honors for the then-23-year-old hip hop star. He had directed, produced, and streamed the mixtape to the web, all from Chicago.
It was the first streaming-only album to win a Grammy, while the rapper himself became the first Grammy winner who was not represented by a record label. So you could say three is his lucky number!
