(CNN) -- It's hard to define the "George Benson sound." The guitarist and singer has worn many hats, from R&B to jazz to pop music. Perhaps that is why his career continues to thrive.
"I think what people call 'the George Benson sound' is really the culmination of a lot of things," Benson says. "I think I've had an illustrious career because I've been diversified in my thinking and in my flexibility with artists who are outside the jazz idiom."

With hits like "Give Me the Night," and "On Broadway," Benson made his mark on pop charts in the 1970s and '80s. But he's still going strong with the release of seven albums in 1998.
His trademark on each album, as always, is his excellent guitar work.
"When people see what you can do with an instrument, it really sticks out," Benson says. "A guitar forces you to delve into all of your knowledge and bring it out."
