The Overlook Hotel is somewhat inspired by Stanley Hotel in Colorado.

According to Screen Rant, Stephen King checked in at Stanley Hotel in Colorado right before they closed for the off-season making them the only guest at the hotel in the 1974.

King was inspired to write a horror novel while walking through the empty hallways and the eerie feeling of isolation. According to Screen Rant, Stanley Hotel has a haunted history making it popular among adventure seekers and paranormal investigators.

Stephen and his wife stayed in room 217, the room number is featured in the novel as well but it is changed to room 237 in the film adaptation. The room was famously known for the 1911 incident when a housekeeper Elizabeth Wilson was injured by an explosion while lighting a lantern.

Although Wilson only suffered injuries and later recovered, it is believed the room is still haunted by her spirit. Elizabeth is known for moving guests' luggage around the room and folding clothes in room 217, according to Screen Rant. 

King also claimed to see a small boy wandering around the hotel but he and his wife were the only confirmed guests at the hotel during their stay. The hotel guests and staff have also reported unexplained noises and figures at the hotel, adds Screen Rant. 

Although The Overlook Hotel is somewhat based on a real-life haunting story at Stanley Hotel in Colorado, the caretaker Delbert is not a real person.
