Song Background

A break-up song recorded by numerous artists, “For the Good Times” was conceived and penned by American singer-songwriter Kris Kristofferson in 1968. In the same year, while traveling to Nashville to the Gulf of Mexico, he finished the first verse and chorus of the song. However, when he totally finished it, he did not record it and presented to fellow country music artist Bill Nash. The latter then recorded it with record producer Jerry Kennedy producing it for Smash Records in 1968. The song then appeared on Kristofferson’s debut album, Kristofferson, in 1970.

Two years later, another country music singer-songwriter, Ray Price, recorded his version of “For the Good Times.“ Interestingly, it was a big hit and went very successful. In fact, the song won “Song of the Year” awarded by the Academy of Country Music. Price’s version became the most famous cover of all. In addition, “For the Good Times” was the fifth no. 1 single of Price which spent a total of 19 weeks on the chart in 1970. Moreover, his version crossed over onto the pop charts peaking at no 11 on the Billboard Hot 100. This marked Price’s only release to have entered the Top 40 on the said chart.

Other Versions, Elvis Presley’s Rendition

The song became very popular across the country and neighboring countries in the late 1960’s through the early 1970’s. To note, there were over 30 artists who have rendered a rendition of the song. The most notable ones to have recorded their own versions include Lynn Anderson, Anne Murray, Chet Atkins, Dolly Parton, Crystal Gale, and Johnny Cash. In addition, it was also covered by Frank Sinatra, Kenny Rogers, Willie Nelson, Perry Como, and Tennessee Ernie Ford with Glen Campbell (a duet). However, one of the best and classic recordings of “For the Good Times” ever released was that of Elvis Presley‘s.

To tell, Presley released a recording of the song for his compilation album, Welcome To My World. Also, prior to this, he included it on his live album, Elvis: As Recorded at Madison Square Garden. Compared to the other artists who have given a touch of the song, Presley’s distinct and tasteful vocals gave a new flavor, something that quenches the thirst of one’s ears, wanting to hear some more.
