Portugal's World Cup came to a disappointing end on Tuesday evening when current European Champions, Spain, beat the Portuguese in the Round of 16 in Cape Town.

Portugal was below average and allowed the Spain to dominate the match with fluent passing and interplay that couldn't be matched.

With countless stars shinning brightly on the Spanish side, many counted on former World Footballer of the Year, Cristiano Ronaldo, to spark a light and do something remarkable.

But for despite those who hoped and prayed, it wasn't Ronaldo's night. Well, to be honest, it wasn't his World Cup either, as the Real Madrid star had a very ordinary tournament.

When comparing players, many looked to Messi, Kaka and Ronaldo to shine in South Africa and dominate games with their dazzling skill, ability and footwork.

While Messi and Kaka continue into the quarterfinals, Ronaldo will return home to face the music.

As for the press back home, they blame Ronaldo for the team's poor performance. Many feel he didn't do enough to at least try to rescue the Portuguese when the Spanish looked so comfortable.

Many headlines commented on Ronaldo's effort on the pitch. Watching the game on the tele, I think I heard the commentator mention his name once or twice in the second half.

"Ronaldo had left the World Cup without leaving his mark," read the headline in the daily A Bol .

The editor of Diario de Noticias (DN) the Madrid man "had virtually not existed."

Correio da Manha one of the publications in Lisbon said, "Ronaldo played one of his worst matches ever for the national side."

While many blamed Ronaldo, others felt manager Carlos Quieroz also should not go without reckoning.

"Portugal eliminated after an error by Queiroz" was the headline in the DN (Portuguese Publication).

Another report read, "An unambitious coach," referring to Quieroz.

So, looking at the performance last night and taking everything into context, the question which arises is, was Portugal good enough?

Looking at the structure, game play and overall performance of the Spanish, you would have to say they were like magicians on the ball.

Although Villa was on the scoresheet, the likes of Xavi, Iniesta, Alonso, Ramos and Busquets all played their part.

The center of midfield is the engine room of any team, and with Xavi as the leader in that respect, you would commend him on a brilliant performance.

Spain will now face Paraguay in Johannesburg on Saturday in another tasteful matchup, and many think Spain will come out on top.

Spain has definitely benefited from the Barca-style game and having eight of their players on the squad could be a gift from heaven for del Bosque.
