The Florida baseball coach scandal is a reminder that even the best coaches can make mistakes.

One such mistake by Florida baseball coach Kevin O’Sullivan made during the College World Series on June 20, 2021, caused a scandal.

During the game against Oral Roberts, Florida was leading 5-3 in the eighth inning when O’Sullivan made an unexpected and costly mistake. 

Righty closer Brandon Neely had just pitched a strikeout when Neely was removed from the game.

The reason for this sudden substitution was too many mound visits.

According to NCAA Rule 6, each team is allowed three offensive conferences and six defensive conferences per game, no more than three of which may include a coach. 

However, after Florida’s replay challenge of a safe call at first base was confirmed, Florida catcher BT Riopelle visited Neely, making UF’s sixth defensive conference.

Later on, when ORU pinch hitter Camryn Williams walked, O’Sullivan crossed the foul line onto the pitcher’s mound for the seventh defensive conference.

This forced UF to change its pitchers and turn to freshman lefty Cade Fisher, who had limited time to warm up.

The aftermath

The substitution of Neely for Fisher proved to be a risky move for O’Sullivan, as Fisher had limited playing experience, yet he was now up against Oral Roberts’ seasoned hitters. 

Fisher loaded the bases with no outs, but eventually got out of the bases loaded jam by getting Oral Roberts left fielder Justin Quinn to line out to left field to end the eighth inning.

In the ninth inning, Fisher loaded the bases, and gave up a run on a force out. 

However, Fisher managed to strike out ORU’s designated hitter, Logan Domenico, even with runners on first and third. 

Fisher then got ORU catcher Jacob Godman to fly out to center to end the game for his second save of the season.

However, the Florida baseball coach scandal didn’t end there. 

Despite winning the game, O’Sullivan took full responsibility for his mistake and apologized to his team postgame.

“We keep it in the dugout, and I had a brief conversation with the umpire before the inning. It was totally my mistake. 

And no one feels more terrible than I do,” O’Sullivan said.
