At just 31 years of age, a troubled former NASCAR driver has lost his life.

Kevin Grubb was found dead in a Richmond, Va. hotel room May 6 around 11:30 a.m. local time. Richmond Police said they believe Grubb died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. According to ESPNEWS, no sign of drug use was found in the hotel. However, toxicology reports aren't due back for six weeks.

Foul play is not suspected, said Henrico County Lt. Richard Cosby.

"Right now, it's an ongoing death investigation," Cosby said. "There doesn't appear to be anything unusual or suspicious [at the crime scene]."

Grubb was suspended from NASCAR indefinitely in 2006 after he refused to take a NASCAR-mandated drug test. It was his second offense of the policy, the first coming in 2004, when he failed a test.

After his second offense involving the drug policy, Grubb claimed he had no memory of NASCAR asking him to take a test due to the concussion he suffered during the crash that caused NASCAR to want to test him.

Grubb was the younger brother of former NASCAR driver Wayne Grubb.

He began his NASCAR career in the then Craftsman Truck Series in 1996 at the age of 18 and participated in eight races in the series, in 1996, 1997, and 2006.

Eight years in the Busch Series left him with 174 starts, 10 top-fives, 32 top-10s, and one career pole at Dover.
