United Reportedly Open Kane Talks With Spurs
Sunday, July 5
The Sun (paywall protected) reported (via The Telegraph) the Red Devils made "direct contact" with Tottenham over a potential bid for Kane, as the team looked to bolster their striker depth.
On June 19, Kane said he was "flattered" by Manchester United's interest, but reaffirmed his commitment to Tottenham, per Sky Sports: "I am happy at Spurs and I look forward to the future with Spurs. I have seen there is interest but that's all I know."
The report stated that while Manchester United is interested, no bid has been made.
Former Manchester striker Andy Cole did not hold back when offering his opinion on the worth of Kane on June 16, per David McDonnell of the Mirror:
I think the kid’s talented, but we have to be honest. He’s had half a season where everything went for him - penalties at the keeper and rebounds coming straight to his feet.
He’s scored some goals. But to take that leap - because your second season in the Premier League is always tough - if it did happen and to leave Tottenham and come to Man United and for them to pin all their hopes on him [would be tough].
"Tottenham will not sell star striker Harry Kane to Manchester United, even if a major bid comes in this summer," reported ESPN FC on June 15.
The aforementioned article suggests Red Devils boss Louis van Gaal could sanction a £40 million bid for the 2014-15 PFA Young Player of the Year. Kane racked up a stunning total of 21 strikes in 34 Premier League appearances throughout his debut season, not to mention five in seven Europa League displays, per WhoScored.com.
Kane can play as an effective holdup striker and is also excellent at breaking beyond the opposition's defence.
He is well built and possesses the turn of speed needed to ensure he remains a constant threat. United's attacking line stuttered throughout the 2014-15 season, with Wayne Rooney, Robin van Persie and Radamel Falcao managing just 26 goals between them.
Kane recently admitted he would be happy to remain at White Hart Lane for the rest of his playing days, per Sami Mokbel of the Daily Mail: "Could I spend the rest of my career at Tottenham? I don't see why not. Tottenham are a great club on the rise. I hope we get better and I'd love to stay here for as long as possible. If I'm still here in 10 years, I'd be over the moon."
Spurs chairman Daniel Levy has a reputation for being a difficult negotiator but someone who ultimately does sell his best players. Luka Modric and Gareth Bale have both joined Real Madrid in recent years, leaving Spurs' progress severely hampered in the process.
Manager Mauricio Pochettino will be pleased with his side's recent fifth-placed finish, but the north London club need to push on from here.
Champions League football should be the next objective, a feat which will likely be led by Kane if he isn't lured to Old Trafford.
