It is made apparent in early flashback episodes that Suzanne always had problems with her social development but seemed to be fairly well adjusted, with a job as a supermarket greeter. When she was left home alone for the first time in her life at the age of 28, Suzanne went to the local park, where she bumped into a young boy, Dylan, that she recognised as a customer at the store she worked at. 

Enthused by making a new friend, Suzanne invited Dylan back to her apartment, where the two played video games – until Dylan suggested he call his parents to let them know of his whereabouts. When she excitedly told him he was staying for the weekend, Dylan attempted to call the police, but Suzanne stopped him insisting that the police are only for emergencies. The boy then tried to escape, and was chased through the apartment by a confused, agitated Suzanne. He climbed through the window to the fire escape – only to fall, presumably to his death, when Suzanne reached out to try and grab him.
