Irene Cara passed away on Saturday. She was best remembered for her roles in the cult films Flashdance and Fame from the 1980s.

She stated, ‘It is with great regret that I announce the demise of Irene Cara on behalf of her family. The Oscar-winning actress, singer, songwriter, and producer died at home in Florida. Her cause of death is currently unknown, but we’ll let you know as we know more. The family of Irene has asked for privacy as they grieve.’ 

The statement added, ‘She was a wonderfully brilliant soul whose legacy will live forever via her music and films.’

The publicist said, ‘I’ll be reading each and every one of the comments and know she’ll be beaming from Heaven. Please share your thoughts and memories of the artist. She loved her followers.’

Cara, a 1959 Bronx, New York City native, first performed in theatre and television before winning the title part in the musical drama Sparkle in 1976.

Early in her life, Cara began working in the entertainment industry, including theatre, television, music, and movies.

The musician received her big break in 1980 when she was chosen to play Coco Hernandez in the renowned musical film Fame, which followed the trials and tribulations of a group of high school students in New York City.

Cara’s performance of the musical drama’s title song would go on to win an Academy Award for Best Original Song and garner the performer nods for two Grammy Awards, among other honors.

Irene Cara’s family released the following statement on her official Twitter account in reaction to viral rumors regarding the cause of her passing:

‘Thank you to everyone who took the time to share their sorrow. Please refrain from posting spam concerning cryptocurrency. Please refrain from blaming a vaccine for her passing, those who are doing so. Until an autopsy is finished, we won’t have any medical answers.’

Tributes were paid to her on Social Media.

On Saturday, condolences for Cara flooded social media.
