A prominent Indian-American politician, Nikki Haley, made history on Tuesday when she announced her 2024 U.S. Presidential election bid.

Haley is the first person of South Asian descent to run for president in the United States and was previously confirmed by the U.S. Senate in a 96–4 vote to serve as United States ambassador to the United Nations from 2017 to 2018, making her the first Indian American member of a presidential cabinet.

Growing up in Bamberg, South Carolina, Haley strongly believes in America’s strength and potential. In her own words, she identifies herself as “a proud daughter of Indian immigrants” shaped by her personal experiences at home and abroad.

Nikki Haley, 51, is a trailblazer in many ways. She is the first Indian-American to serve in any US presidential cabinet and the first Indian-American woman governor.

Prior to her candidacy for US President, she was twice elected Governor of South Carolina and served as US Ambassador to the United Nations under Donald Trump. 

Since then, she has become an iconic figure within the Indian diaspora and a strong advocate for strengthening ties between India and America.

In January 2021, Haley will have to win the Republican Party’s primary before challenging former President Trump in the 2024 White House race – making her the first Republican challenger against him since he assumed office in 2016.

Her candidacy marks an important moment in American politics and recognizes her unwavering commitment to progress, justice, and integrity for all Americans.

Indian roots

Growing up in Bamberg, South Carolina, Nimrata “Nikki” Randhawa – or Nikki Haley – was keenly aware of the racial divides that threatened to hinder her sense of belonging. However, she was determined never to let it limit her potential.

Describing herself as “a proud daughter of Indian immigrants,” Nikki credits her parents with instilling in her the values of acceptance at a time when the townsfolk saw things differently.

Her father, Ajit Singh Randhawa, and mother, Raj Kaur Randhawa, had emigrated from Punjab, India, in the 1960s and went on to run a successful clothing store on the other side of America’s racial line. 

Their combined wisdom in teaching her to focus on similarities instead of differences has been a driving force throughout Haley’s life and career.

According to Nikki Haley, America is a shining beacon of hope, opportunity, and freedom. In her own words and experience, the Founding Fathers laid out a framework that stands today as a testament to their commitment to a better tomorrow.

Her parents instilled in her the value of being thankful for living in America and reminded her of the promise of freedom, which she strongly believes is more than just an empty phrase.

“Chameleonic”

Nikki Haley has risen to the top of the Republican Party, gaining a reputation as a staunch defender of American interests abroad and presenting herself as an able conservative capable of credibly addressing gender and race issues. 

During her time as Ambassador to the United Nations under Donald Trump, she led the charge in withdrawing from the Obama-era Iran Nuclear Deal. 

She was notably absent from many of Trump’s campaign appearances leading up to this election, perhaps indicative of her distancing herself from his politics in recent times. 

However, this has resulted in voters questioning her ‘chameleonic’ efforts in attempting to appease both parties – something that could prove a challenge for Haley’s campaign in the future.
