Born to a Jamaican and Bajan mother and an African-American father in Baltimore, her mother named Jada after her favorite actress Jada Rowland. Her mother, Adrienne Banfield-Norris, gave birth when she was in high school and raised Jada as a single mother. The actress grew up in the love of her mother and grandfather who noticed her passion for performing and enrolled her to dance piano, and ballet lessons.

Soon after, the lady enrolled in Baltimore School for the Arts where she met the rapper Tupac Shakur who would later recommend her name in her first film. Eventually, Smith made her acting debut in 1990 at the age of 19 when she played in True Colors and continued getting guest roles in other television shows.
