James Jones Agrees to Sign with Chargers | News, Scores, Highlights, Stats, and Rumors
Carter Sullivan Veteran wide receiver James Jones has agreed to join the San Diego Chargers this season, according to ESPN's Josina Anderson, who received a text message from the veteran wide receiver.
Ian Rapoport of NFL Network first reported that the Chargers would be adding Jones to the fold.
Rapoport previously reported that Jones was visiting the Chargers, as the team was looking for depth at the position after Stevie Johnson suffered a knee injury.
Jones put together a solid season with the Green Bay Packers in 2015. The San Jose State product made 50 grabs for 890 yards and eight touchdowns in his return to the franchise where he spent the first seven years of his career before a one-year pit stop with the Oakland Raiders.
Just like he helped bolster the Packers' receiving corps after Green Bay lost Jordy Nelson to an ACL injury during the preseason last year, he could do the same for the Chargers. Marty Caswell of The Mighty 1090 Sports Radio reported that Johnson expects to have surgery on his meniscus, but a timeline for his return is unclear.
Meanwhile, Josh Alper of ProFootballTalk passed along comments Jones made during a June appearance on SiriusXM NFL Radio about trying to find a football home:
I got me a Super Bowl ring. I'd love to get another one. But my ultimate goal is to play 12 years. And I just want to get out there and play football. It doesn't matter who it's for. I just want to play. If it is a chance where I can get to a team that they're a contender or we have a chance to win the Super Bowl, that's awesome, too. Everybody thinks they're going win the Super Bowl right now. I'm just trying to get somewhere to play.
The Chargers aren't a top Super Bowl contender, checking in with 55-1 odds to win it all, according to Odds Shark. However, signing in San Diego moves him another step closer to that 12-year goal. This would mark his 10th season in the NFL.
It also gives him a chance to carve out a meaningful role in the offense. The Chargers have limited options behind Keenan Allen and Travis Benjamin, so he will likely slide right into the No. 3 spot Johnson was expected to assume before the injury setback.
Jones is not the most dynamic or explosive wideout, but he's proved his reliability both with the Packers and during his short stint with the Raiders, when he made a career-high 73 catches.
