James Maddison ankle injury to keep Tottenham midfielder out until new year
Ava Arnold James Maddison will be out “until the new year” with his ankle injury, Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou has confirmed.
Maddison, 26, was forced off during Tottenham’s 4-1 defeat against Chelsea on Monday night, after going to ground without contact as he ran into the box.
The midfielder earlier withdrew from England’s squad for their European Championship qualifiers against Malta and North Macedonia.

Postecoglou said: “Madders, a lot worse than we thought. He came off with the ankle injury, but the next day wasn’t great so we sent him off for a scan. So not great for him and probably into the new year for him.”
The north London side will also be without defender Micky Van de Ven for “a couple of months” after the 22-year-old sustained a hamstring injury during the same game.
The Netherlands international will not require surgery but Postecoglou confirmed that he will be out for an extended period.
“Micky Van de Ven with a hamstring injury we knew was fairly significant,” he said. “Probably a couple of months for him – looking into the new year.”
Van de Ven was previously sidelined for around 10 weeks after suffering a similar issue for his former club Wolfsburg in February 2022.
Tottenham face Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday where they will also be without Van de Ven’s fellow defenders Cristian Romero and Destiny Udogie through suspension.
Ben Davies and Pedro Porro should be fit for the trip for Molineux, however.
Striker Richarlison will miss the game after it was decided he would undergo surgery on an ongoing groin problem.
Postecoglou added: “Richy had the operation, which we’d kind of scheduled anyway because Richy has been battling with it from day one and we thought with the international break coming up we thought it would be a good time to get it done.
“He should only be a month if everything goes well so not too long after the international break.”
