There is more to being patriotic than meets the eye. In fact, there have been a lot of patriotic songs that have been released, but only a few gave the same power as “The Battle Hymn of the Republic.” Moreover, many artists have already rendered their versions of this song, but there’s nothing more poignant than that of Johnny Cash’s performance.

A Synopsis of the Hymn

Originally published in February 1862, “The Battle Hymn of the Republic” was penned by American writer Julia Ward Howe for The Atlantic Monthly. Immediately after its first publication, the hymn received massive popularity due to its connection to the American Civil War.

For over a century, “The Battle Hymn of the Republic” has become one of the most loved patriotic songs of all time. As a matter of fact, the hymn has been performed and heard at national conventions for major political parties. Also, it has been recorded and rendered by some great country artists.

Johnny Cash Renders “The Battle Hymn of the Republic”

One of the many artists who has incredibly sung the classic patriotic song was the great Johnny Cash. Interestingly, he not only performed the song solo, but he also sang it along with The Carter Family, The Tennessee Three, and The Statler Brothers.

On September 27, 1969, following the finale for that episode of The Johnny Cash Show, Cash together with the three groups performed the song.

Standing alone on stage, Cash started the performance with nothing but darkness behind him. Briefly, he introduced the song and talked about the importance of the troops during the Civil War. He said:

“A song can belong to all of us. You don’t have to be a rich man to have a beautiful thing like music.”

After the short introduction, Cash strummed his guitar and started singing. After a few moments, the other groups joined him, providing amazing harmonies to Cash’s incredible vocals.

Through the years, Cash had been giving us outstanding performances, and this one is, for sure, one of the best. And, we could not resist but to share it with y’all.
