Style trends can be weird. They can be confusing. They can be divisive. Or, they can be universally loved. But the one I’m about to talk about is, well, certainly not the latter. It is, however, a mix of the first three, but I’ll let you be the final judge — I personally think it’s 100 percent worth a try. In fact, I had this particular style on my mind, but a recent Katie Holmes sighting actually propelled me to research it a bit more. 

Holmes was recently spotted out and about in New York City, and honestly, her outfit is just so relatable. It’s casual, it’s comfy, and, TBH, it’s a bit all over the place — which can happen when it’s spring but still cold out. Getting dressed becomes confusing; you want to wear, well, spring things but the weather doesn't always permit that. So, you improvise! And that’s exactly what she did. 

The actress went with some trusty staples including baggy, beige trousers you can wear year-round. She paired the loose-fitting bottoms, which are right in line with the billowy pants trend, with what looked to be a camel-colored sweater, under which there was a striped button-down poking out. A forest-green rain coat protected against the unexpected elements (aka, rain or snow — who knows!), while a pair of the most divisive spring shoes rounded out the ensemble — divisive because people have opinions about them. Enter: the fisherman sandals.

Fisherman sandals have a very particular look, as in, they stand out in a crowd of shoes, which is why my eyes immediately spotted them even though they just subtly peeked out from underneath her pant’s long hem. Typically, it has a woven upper that can vary between leather, suede, or vegan leather; each works for the signature silhouette, which might conjure up thoughts of, well, actual fisherman, which the footwear is actually named after. In fact, the style was designed for those wielding actual rods and reels for a simple, highly practical reason: The shoes are quick-draining. Make sense!

Now, they’ve become a fashion shoe; luxe brands like The Row have churned out their own take, while fan-favorite mall brands like J.Crew and Madewell have also created their own take on the style. While internet-dividing, the shoe is undeniably versatile, which gives them added brownie points. You can wear them with jeans, skirts, or dresses, plus, you can wear them with socks, too. And, the comfort is also there.
