Kona Morrow's Men's Soccer Recruiting Profile
Sophia Dalton Personal Statement
One thing that I have been blessed with is the belief that if I want something bad enough and I’m willing to work hard for it, it is possible. More importantly, I know that if I am to learn, excel or to be at the top of my game in anything, I must be coachable.
My passion for soccer is the perfect example. I watched my dad play soccer and the professional teams all the time and that’s where my interest for the game started. I had a late start, 10 years old, relative to team players who had years of playing time before I started. My only experience, came from watching the game. I knew I had a lot of catch up work to do, and I was ready to build those skills.
My first team was the Hawaii Slammers Soccer Club (2013-2014). I was fortunate that the coach was willing to give me a shot if I could prove I was coachable and a fast learner. Presently I am with the Laulima Soccer Club
When I played with the slammers I would play right-wing. My current coach allowed me to experiment with other positions such as halfback. In the later part of 2015 my coach let me play center forward during one game. Since I’ve been playing in that position I have excelled in my shooting skills and passing has become my specialty.
I have come a long way in a few short years, but, I recognize I still want to be an improved, skilled and powerful player. To do so I keep active on the days I don’t have practice. I go running with my dad two miles every other day. While running, we do sprints here and there. I also swim laps regularly and participate in the Hawaii junior lifeguard program. Another thing I’d do to keep active is get at least one touch of the ball every day, even if that means just juggling the ball for five minutes. My dad and I would often go to pickup games on the weekends so I could have a lot more time with the ball and get more experience dribbling against adults. Also, I often play on my dad’s ranger league team where things can get rough.
Given all my passion for soccer, I am driven to do well academically as well because I believe it will bring additional opportunities to continue to play soccer until I reach a professional level.
I am a coachable player, I will be able to adapt to any style of playing!
