On Tuesday, Mexican footballing legend Hugo Sanchez received the #MARCALeyenda award in recognition for his untouchable records which were set in the 1980s and 1990s and remain unbeaten for Real Madrid.

When he arrived as a young 23-year-old striker at Atletico Madrid, he had just been crowned a league winner with Pumas for the second time and was ready for a new challenge.

Four years later, after a Copa del Rey and finishing as the league's top scorer with 19 goals, he left for their arch rivals Real.

He went on to write his name into the history books of Los Blancos with seven seasons, ending four of them as top scorer, taking his total to five, a record only equalled by Alfredo Di Stefano and Quini.

Only Telmo Zarra, who managed six with Athletic Club, has more, whilst Cristiano Ronaldo has three and Lionel Messi has four.

The Mexican was part of an era which included the likes of Emilio Butragueno and Michel with the only title missing from his cabinet being the European Cup.

Despite that, he won the UEFA Cup (1986), five consecutive league titles (from 1986 to 1990), a Copa del Rey and two Supercopa de Espanas.

Sanchez's goals too were spectacular, such as his memorable backheel against Logrones in April 1988.

His winning character made him a popular and much loved figure among fans of his team, though often drawing jealousy from rivals, and he was never forgiven by many in the red and white half of Madrid for his betrayal.

Even at the Camp Nou, he was far from a popular man, though he relished the abuse he would get on his visits.

His best scoring season was when he drew level with Zarra's record of 38 goals in a single season, which stood for 20 years more until Cristiano Ronaldo hit 40, though even he could not match the incredible stat that all 38 of Sanchez's strikes were with his first touch.

He left Madrid with 164 goals in 240 games for Real in the league, with 208 goals in all competitions making him the sixth highest scorer in the club's history.

Eventually, Sanchez would return to Spain later for a season at Rayo Vallecano, ending his time in the country on 234 goals in 347 games, with records that would not be broken for decades to come.
