“Love in the Dark” by Jessie Reyez
Carter Sullivan Jessie Reyez has stated that she came up with “Love in the Dark” during “a really sad time” in her life and has described it as being “vulnerable”. And honestly, to some degree it reads as if she is addressing a deceased loved one. But in other instances (such as the chorus), the addressee would logically be a person who is still alive.
');var c=function(){cf.showAsyncAd(opts)};if(typeof window.cf !== 'undefined')c();else{cf_async=!0;var r=document.createElement("script"),s=document.getElementsByTagName("script")[0];r.async=!0;r.src="//";r.readyState?r.onreadystatechange=function(){if("loaded"==r.readyState||"complete"==r.readyState)r.onreadystatechange=null,c()}:r.onload=c;s.parentNode.insertBefore(r,s)}; })();So going out a bit on a limb, it seems as if she has in fact lost someone she loved. For instance, at the beginning of the song especially it is pretty obvious that she is speaking on the topic of human mortality. But in a roundabout way, her losing this individual has also made her more appreciative for loved ones, i.e. the addressee, who are still around. And thus what she is telling this person is that even if he or she is on the brink of death, she will be there to ‘pull them back up’. She is compelled to express such a sentiment because she feels that she would be “nothing without” this person. And in that regard, the idea the title is meant to point to is that even in the ‘darkest’ of circumstances, the singer’s love for this person will persist.
