Her great-grandfather, DeHart Hubbard, was an athlete and won an Olympic gold medal and eventually became the first American of African descent to win the same in 1924. But in the middle of her career, she put her acting on hold because she wanted to make sure her daughter at home was safe and sound, as she was young at that time.
