The passing of Anthony Ciccone, Madonna‘s older brother, is a tragic loss for the whole family. As a complex character beloved by those close to him, the news of his untimely death shocked his sister and other family members. 

Joe Henry, Madonna’s brother-in-law, announced the sad news on social media over the weekend. He described Anthony as “a complex character” whose life ended too soon at 66 years old. The Ciccone family has gone through significant tragedy in recent years and could use some prayers from fans and friends.

Henry’s brother-in-law, Anthony Gerard Ciccone, sadly passed away last evening. Although they had known each other since Henry was 15 and experienced many highs and lows during their years living in Michigan together, Henry understood Anthony better than he was sometimes willing to let on. 

Henry remarked that he always loved him despite their wrongdoings or disagreements; family remains no matter what. In his farewell, Henry hoped that the God his blessed mother believed in has welcomed Anthony into her arms. Regardless of anyone else’s opinion, Henry was enabled to hold this hope close to his heart today.

Anthony had reportedly been dealing with alcoholism and spending time homeless over the years, including a 2013 incident where he needed nine stitches after resisting arrest in a public bathroom in Michigan. He claimed that Madonna and his family did not care about him, saying “I’m an embarrassment.”

Although the singer had not released a statement at press time, PEOPLE has learned that her relationship with her brother was complicated due to his struggles. 

The source said “Madonna supported him in every way she could when he was willing to take the support,” and confirmed that family members visited him while in rehab as he declined these past few months.”

It is believed that Anthony passed away in Madonna’s home state of Michigan, where she grew up. In 2011, he spoke out about being “homeless on the street” and living under a bridge there. Christopher confirmed later that year that he was back home recovering from time spent in a treatment facility.
