NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported prior to kickoff of the Wild Card Game with the Minnesota Vikings that Lynch "never felt quite right practicing all week. Had a setback Friday following his surgery."

Rapoport added that "Lynch hoped he could gut it out, but he knew [he] couldn't. He told coaches when he saw them—boarding the plane. Stayed home to rehab."

"At the pace he's going, if he keeps doing what he's doing, I have no doubts that he'll be leading the team and the organization when he needs to be there," Empower founder and head instructor Tareq Azim said, per Rapoport.

"He's going through some very significant increases in performance and making tremendous strides," Azim said, noting that he provides regular updates to Seahawks officials. "My responsibility is to get him to his ideal max state to take this team to the Super Bowl again, but more importantly, to bring him back to full health. That decision will be on him." ...

"Beast Mode is alive," Azim said. "We can all assume this or that, but it's all about how he feels. ... He was like, 'Oh man, I gotta get my legs back.' I'm like, 'Oh my God. You do have your legs back!' But around Marshawn, you can't be normal. You can't have normal be OK. When he does things that are not normal, then it's, 'OK, that's Beast Mode. That's Marshawn.'"

Injury Setbacks Limiting Lynch's Impact

In his sixth season with Seattle, Lynch, 29, has been battling injuries off and on. He went down with a hamstring injury in Week 3's win over the Chicago Bears, causing him to miss the next two games.

The Pro Bowler also has his lowest average yards per carry (3.8) since 2010 in part because of injuries. Those lingering problems opened up an opportunity for Thomas Rawls, who was a revelation in the backfield prior to breaking his ankle in Week 14, ending his season.
