Her father formed a band called “The Schiffters” when she was nine years old, and Martina began singing backing vocals for the band. By the time she was a teenager, she was even playing the keyboard.

Martina McBride formed a band called Lotus in 1987, married a sound engineer named John McBride in 1988, and moved to Nashville in 1989 to pursue a solo career. She joined her husband and Garth Brooks on the road, helping sell merchandise at concerts. Brooks was impressed with McBride’s voice and offered her the opportunity to open for him and obtain a recording contract. She landed a contract with RCA Nashville Records in 1991.
