The Gwinnett School of Mathematics, Science, and Technology (GSMST) community, and indeed the broader world of education, has suffered a profound loss. Our beloved chemistry teacher Mary Denise Bergh has passed away after suffering a stroke on October 18th. After brave efforts to save her at Grady hospital, she was moved to a hospice center in Peachtree Corners, where she peacefully left us.

Mary Bergh was more than a teacher; she was a beacon of inspiration, a mentor, a dedicated wife, a loving mother, a cherished sister, and a loyal friend. Her life was a testament to service, kindness, and the relentless pursuit of knowledge. Her belief in the strength of family and the power of being the best version of oneself were the guiding principles of her life.

A passionate educator for 40 years, Mary’s joy in teaching chemistry was palpable. Her classroom mantra, “Units are your friends!” encapsulated her approach to making science accessible and enjoyable. The impact she made is immeasurable, but perhaps best reflected in the students who flourished under her guidance. Mary firmly believed in the adage “Knowledge is power,” and she empowered countless young minds throughout her career.

Mary’s loyalty extended beyond her profession to the friendships she formed. Known for her kind heart, she was always ready to lend support whenever needed. Her positive outlook and “can-do” attitude made her an invaluable source of love and support for those lucky enough to know her.

Mary leaves behind a large and loving family, including her husband Matthew, to whom she was married for 34 years, and their daughters Taylor, Sarah, and Megan. She also leaves behind her sister Kathleen, five brothers Chris, John, Jim, PJ, and Steven, five stepsisters, four stepbrothers, and a special bond with her sister-in-law Amy, niece Anna, and nephew Joe. Her devotion to her family was unwavering, and she served as a rock for everyone.

The outpouring of love and support in these past two weeks has been a testament to how much Mary was loved. Her family extends their heartfelt thanks to all who have stood by their side during this challenging time.

A service will be held to honor Mary’s life in January. The date will be announced once it’s decided.

Mary’s passing is a heartbreaking loss for all who knew her. From college sorority sisters to students she taught over four decades, her impact is deeply felt. Her legacy as a dedicated educator, a loving family member, and a loyal friend will continue to inspire us all.
