Masters 2017 Leaderboard: Latest Scores and Standings from Friday at Augusta | News, Scores, Highlights, Stats, and Rumors
Daniel Santos A whirlwind opening round at the 2017 Masters Tournament meant Charley Hoffman was fighting to retain his place atop the leaderboard on Friday, but a rocky morning session saw the American show some signs of teetering.
With great talents such as Phil Mickelson, Justin Rose and Rory McIlroy on his tail, Hoffman knew mistakes needed to be kept to a minimum on Day 2, and a string of five bogeys over six holes saw his bright start collapse.
Meanwhile, Sergio Garcia made an early rise through the standings after birdieing his first three holes of the Day 2 outing, as did American dark horse Ryan Moore, who finished a bogey-free round in 69.
Reigning champion Danny Willett had a day to forget at Augusta National Golf Club, however, after a quadruple bogey on the first hole of Day 2 put the rest of his tournament in doubt.
You can keep an eye on the updated leaderboard as Friday's action unfolds here:
Garcia's drive up the Masters rankings ensured at least one European broke up the American vice grip on the top places on Friday morning, with Hoffman, Moore and William McGirt accounting for three of the four top places at one point.
The Spaniard achieved a career first by managing to save shots on each of his first three holes, per ESPN Stats and Info, evidence to suggest this could be the year he finally wins his maiden major championship:
ESPN Stats & Info @ESPNStatsInfoSergio Garcia started his round with 3 consecutive birdies – the first time in 64 rounds at #TheMasters that he’s done that.
The world No. 11 went level with Hoffman for the lead at the end of his front nine before a triple bogey on the 10th meant Garcia fell away again, struggling to tame the 495-yard par four as he slipped back into the fold.
It was at the sixth that the wheels started to come off Hoffman's wagon, bogeying three holes in succession before dropping two more shots on the 10th and 11th as his title challenge came under heavy scrutiny:
ESPN Stats & Info @ESPNStatsInfoCharley Hoffman at #TheMasters First 23 Holes: 8-under (10 birdies, 2 bogeys) Last 7 Holes: 5-over (0 birdies, 5 bogeys)
That could be a tall order, however, considering the Masters has produced back-to-back non-American champions only three times since 1990, with 15 of the past 27 champions coming from either the United States or Canada.
Willett doesn't look likely to help that ratio with a second successive victory in 2017, either, having dropped four shots on the par-four Hole 1 as the No Laying Up podcast tried to see the funny side of his fairway woes:

McGirt was among the early risers on Day 2, and a score of one over was enough to see him temporarily pull up to second behind Hoffman on two-under-par, although the Europeans made up most of the chasing pack.
We might have witnessed a throwback performance from Ernie Els had he managed to carry on the pace that saw him end Day 1 birdieing four of the last six holes. However, the South African was just happy to make sure Hole 1 gave him less hassle than it did last year, per Golfweek:
Golfweek @golfweekErnie Els made a 9 on No. 1 in last year's #Masters. He's taken 9 strokes TOTAL on No. 1 in two rounds this time.
McIlroy's second round got off to a less than convincing start after he bogeyed two of his first three attempts, but the Northern Irishman pulled it back with birdies on the fifth and sixth to finally find some momentum.
The County Down native will be one to watch as long as he can adapt to the demands posed in Augusta, and although Hoffman remains clear of the field for now, but three bogeys on his opening nine showed a fall may not be far off.
