This song is derived directly from a media franchise known as Adventure Time. As such many of the lyrics are specific to two fictional characters contained therein, Marceline (the singer) and Bonnie (the addressee). So to understand the wording in depth, a listener would also have to be quite familiar with the Adventure Time: Distant Lands storyline. But with that being noted, there is a general applicability to the lyrics.  For instance, it is noted that both Marceline and Bonnie (both of whom are never mentioned by name) are products of “messed up” childhoods.

Also, the singer reveals that she is suffering from a condition akin to negative self-perception and ostracization. And this is why she likens herself to a “monster”. But despite the track being entitled so, the main sentiment being relayed is rather the singer’s appreciation for having the addressee as a friend. Indeed in the midst of relaying her own internal issues and insecurities, Marceline is conversely celebrating her association with Bonnie. In doing so, she also mentions the uplifting effect she has had on her life.

This song is from an episode, entitled “Obsidian”, of an animated series known as Adventure Time: Distant Lands. And for the record, King Princess is not the name of one of its characters. Rather that is the moniker which American singer Mikaela Straus goes by. And this is her first collaboration with Olivia Olson. Olson voices the role of Marceline on Adventure Time: Distant Lands.
