NBA style power rankings: Jayson Tatum’s casual fits a statement in Boston
Daniel Foster Boston Celtics forward Jayson Tatum is in the midst of the best season of his young career. He is putting up career-best numbers for the Celtics, averaging roughly 30 points, nine rebounds and five assists per game.
Much of what the four-time NBA All-Star has been able to accomplish on the court has been thoroughly analyzed across countless outlets — and for good reason. But for this week’s NBA style power rankings, we’ve decided to highlight what Tatum has accomplished off the court through fashion.

Let’s break down some of Tatum’s best outfits during his most dominant season in the league:
10. Dec. 29, 2022, vs. Clippers
This fit came just days after Christmas, if you couldn’t tell by Tatum’s pants. For the most part this season, he’s been in the streetwear category, but here, Tatum decided to take it to more of a business-casual level. His black jacket flowed perfectly with the burgundy plaid pants.
Notice the contrast of the shiny buttons on the jacket with the black button on his white dress shirt. A very classy, mature fit for Tatum.
9. Dec. 7, 2022, vs. Suns
Tatum has been up front about his love for the late Kobe Bryant for as long as he has personally been in the NBA. His tribute to Bryant and Michael Jordan hails from an iconic photo of a young Bryant being guarded by Jordan.
Going with all black was a wise choice by Tatum, as Bryant and Jordan stand out even more against that background. Tatum layered a black long-sleeve T-shirt under that shirt with black leather pants and a pair of Air Jordan 1 Low shoes.
8. Dec. 2, 2022, vs. Heat
Tatum has paid homage to multiple people with his fits throughout the season. This hoodie honored civil rights activist Rosa Parks, best known for her Montgomery bus boycott. He styled the yellow in the hoodie to match his Nikes, while his sweatpants seem to match the flowers on the border around Parks.
It looks like Tatum is wearing a white Richard Mille watch on his left wrist. This was a nice, literal representation of Tatum giving Parks her flowers.
7. March 5, vs. Knicks
This multicolored cardigan likely isn’t a one of one, but the way he styled it could’ve fooled anyone. He chose to wear a white tee with a pair of Travis Scott Sail Air Force 1s.
I also appreciate the jeans with a strip of lighter denim running down the side.

6. Oct. 18, 2022, vs. 76ers
Tatum’s yellow and black Dolce & Gabbana fleece was an obvious focal point on opening night. He pulled the cozy look together with baggy, black cargo pants and Air Jordan 1s. The temperature in Boston on opening night was in the mid-50s, so the warm fit wasn’t just for show.
As insignificant as it may seem, the soles of Tatum’s Jordan shoes match the yellow in his fleece. He also rocked a gold-faced watch and gold ring on his index finger to add a few accessories to his look.
5. Dec. 27, 2022, vs. Rockets
On the surface, this look may appear mundane, but it’s all in the details.
Let’s start with the Orange Lobster Nike Dunks. While Dunks have become a bit oversaturated when it comes to streetwear, you won’t see these particular shoes every day. His black jacket has that same orange surrounding a “Love Peace” logo. The third slide of this post showcases another intricacy on the back of Tatum’s shoulders.
It reads, “Good Things Are Coming,” which feels fitting given he’s averaging career highs in points, rebounds, assists and field-goal percentage.
Apparently, Tatum and Dolce & Gabbana have a good thing going, because this is his second time rocking the brand in these rankings. This time, Tatum showcases a black D&G sweater with white lettering. His black, shiny puffer coat adds another layer — literally and figuratively. This sweater is a nice standalone piece, but the puffer goes perfectly with it.
Additionally, Tatum appears to have a “Deuce” chain. That’s dedicated to his son, Jayson Tatum Jr., affectionately known as Deuce.
3. March 24, vs. Pacers
We’ve seen a handful of vests this season, but the black bubble vest with the tapered collar is a definite win for Tatum. All that was necessary with the vest was a black long-sleeve shirt and khaki pants with a side zipper.

Shout out to Deuce Tatum once again, as Jayson wore the chain for him.
2. Nov. 30, 2022, vs. Heat
I’m a fan of letterman jackets in general, but the theme here makes this even more appealing. Tatum’s Market jacket has various, bright patches scattered throughout, all seemingly related to basketball. While there is a mashup of colors, none seem to intrude on each other.
Tatum paired the jacket with a green St. Louis Cardinals hat. He’s also got on a pair of orange Air Jordan 1s. The Cardinals allegiance makes sense because that’s his hometown, and he’s a Jordan Brand athlete.
All of the splashes of color made it easy for Tatum to throw on a pair of ripped jeans to tie this fit together.
1. Jan. 12, vs. Nets
Whether he meant to or not, Tatum seems to subconsciously support his Celtics. (The cardigan doesn’t have the same green, but it’s close enough.) An obvious part of the fit is the multicolored butterflies on the jeans. The inspiration for finding a cardigan in this color could be the hints of light green in the various butterflies.
Tatum made a great decision to opt for white Nike Dunks and a white T-shirt since his fit is already full of color. Let’s not forget the “0” chain, which symbolizes his jersey number.
