NFL Rumors: Dolphins' Jalen Ramsey Restructures Contract, Clears $19.9M in Cap Space | News, Scores, Highlights, Stats, and Rumors
Andrew Mccoy The Miami Dolphins restructured the contract of All-Pro cornerback Jalen Ramsey on Monday, according to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero.
The move cleared roughly $19.9 million in cap space. The Dolphins also did conversions on the contracts of Zach Sieler, Alec Ingold and Durham Smythe in order to clear $28.78 million and get below the salary cap (per Pelissero).
Ramsey recorded 22 tackles, five passes defensed, and three interceptions during his 2023 campaign.
The 29-year-old was acquired by the Dolphins in a trade with the Los Angeles Rams in March 2023, immediately agreeing to an adjusted contract with his new team worth $55 million over three years. Now, $13.89 million of his 2024 salary as well as an $11 million roster bonus will be converted into a signing bonus (via Spotrac).
Although the Dolphins signed former Cleveland Browns linebacker Anthony Walker to a one-year deal, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter, they've watched other key free agents leave for opposing teams due to their tricky cap situation.
Defensive tackle Christian Wilkins joined the Las Vegas Raiders on a four-year deal worth $110 million, while guard Robert Hunt signed a five-year contract with the Carolina Panthers totaling $100 million. Safety Brandon Jones and pass-rusher Andrew Van Ginkel also agreed to contracts with the Denver Broncos and the Minnesota Vikings, respectively.
Although Miami's defense lost several important pieces, the front office will be hoping that the full-time return of Ramsey can help the unit flourish under new defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver. The seven-time Pro Bowl corner missed the first seven weeks of the 2023 season after undergoing knee surgery.
With Ramsey's contract restructured and the team now cap-compliant, the Dolphins can focus on making some more additions to the roster.
