Preakness 2023 Horses: Entry List, Vegas Odds and Dark-Horse Favorites | News, Scores, Highlights, Stats, and Rumors
Ava Arnold Mage was a 15-1 long shot to win the 2023 Kentucky Derby. After doing so, his odds of racing to victory in the Preakness Stakes are unsurprisingly much better. As expected, he's the favorite.
On Saturday, Mage will try to move two-thirds of the way to the Triple Crown by winning the 148th running of the Preakness, held annually each May at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore. If Mage is victorious, he'll have an opportunity to become only the 14th Triple Crown champion at the Belmont Stakes on June 10.
Seven other horses will be looking to deny Mage a Preakness victory. Some have much better odds of doing so than others.
Here's a look at the full lineup for the 2023 Preakness Stakes, along with odds for each horse, then a breakdown of some dark-horse favorites to take down Mage.
2023 Preakness Stakes Lineup, Odds
1. National Treasure (4-1)

5. Red Route One (10-1)
6. Perform (15-1)
7. Blazing Sevens (6-1)
8. First Mission (5-2)
Dark-Horse Favorites
Mage is the clear front-runner to win the Preakness Stakes. But several horses could be wise to bet on as potential victors.
First Mission (5-2) may have only three races of experience, but he's finished first twice and second in the other. So this Brad Cox-trained colt could be one to keep an eye on this Saturday.
"He's a kind horse. He's easy on himself," Cox said, per Horse Racing Nation. "He doesn't overtrain. He doesn't pull too much. He has settled in well."
Jockey Luis Saez, a 2021 Belmont Stakes champion with Essential Quality (who was also trained by Cox), will be riding First Mission in the Preakness. That could help the colt have another successful showing.
Any horse trained by Bob Baffert is a contender to win the Preakness Stakes. The longtime trainer is a seven-time winner of the event, having most recently made it to the winner's circle in 2018, with Triple Crown champion Justify.
Baffert's lone entry in this year's race is National Treasure (4-1). If the colt wins, then Baffert will set a record with his eighth Preakness victory.
National Treasure has competed in five races, but he hasn't won since his inaugural event last September. His jockey will be John Velazquez, who has never won the Preakness but is a three-time Kentucky Derby champion and two-time Belmont winner.
If you're looking for a horse with even longer odds to bet on, then Red Route One (10-1) could be a good choice. The colt is trained by Steve Asmussen, who previously won the Preakness with both Curlin (2007) and Rachel Alexandra (2009).
Red Route One is an experienced horse, having competed in nine previous races. He's a two-time winner, which included racing to victory in his most recent event, the Bath House Row Stakes on April 22.
The jockey for Red Route One will be Joel Rosario, who is a four-time Preakness runner-up still seeking his first win in the race. He's a former Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes champion, though.
