Renee Pagel murder is a twisted story of agony, deception, and brutality. NBC’s Dateline will examine the circumstances surrounding Renee’s stabbing by her ex-husband in an episode titled ‘Window of Opportunity.’

The show will give an insight into the events leading up to an innocent mother’s murder and the subsequent conviction of her former husband. 

‘Window of Opportunity’s’ outline states the following, 

“A Michigan community is shocked when a local mother is found stabbed to death. After the case goes cold for more than a decade, a bombshell reignites the investigation.”

Renee Pagel was murdered in the year 2006 at her home in Courtland Township, Michigan. Sadly for her, the murder case remained cold for the entire decade. 

Although the authorities were quite sure about Michael Pagel’s role in the Renee Pagel murder case, they still couldn’t arrest him due to a lack of concrete evidence. 

Fourteen years after the grisly tragedy, Michael was arrested and charged with his former wife’s murder. 

An in-depth study of the criminal’s motive and action revealed that he decided to kill Renee after a judge ruled in his ex-wife’s favor in a matter pertaining to their divorce. 

The ruling triggered Michael badly as it was against his wishes. He chose to channel that anger and agony into planning and executing the murder of an innocent woman and mother. 

Why did Michael Pagel kill his wife?

Thirteen years after the tragedy, Renee Pagel murder case took a drastic turn in 2019. Michael’s brother Charles disclosed crucial information regarding the case. 

He claimed that his brother/murderer showed him the murder weapon before throwing it in a river. 

Based on that confession and another piece of evidence pointing toward Michael, the authorities arrested him in the following year. 

After dodging the law enforcement agencies for a decade and a half, Michael finally accepted killing his wife. 

In October 2020, Michael Pagel was sentenced to 25 to 50 years in prison. It seems like Michael knew about the impending doom so earlier that year, he pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and made a plea deal with the prosecutors.

According to the Cedar Spring Post, Michael apologized to his adult children and others prior to the sentencing on October 5, 2020. 

Michael asked his deceased wife, his three children, family and friends for forgiveness while quoting the Gospel of Matthew.

“Before you ask God for forgiveness, ask for forgiveness from those you’ve offended,” Pagel said in court. “I am truly sorry. I have greatly sinned.” 

He accepted that he planned Renee’s murder but alleged that his brother Charles executed the vicious attack on the mother-of-three. 

According to Kent County Sheriff’s Office assistant prosecutor Kellee Koncki, there was no evidence to support Michael’s allegation that his brother committed the murder. 

His tactic of blaming the entire thing on his brother obviously did not work. That’s because after Charles disclosed his crime, it was expected that he would try to pin the whole thing on him. 

The Michigan Department of Correction states that Michael Pagel is currently serving his sentence at the Saginaw Correctional Facility in Tittabawassee Township.

He has to spent at least 25 years in prison before he will become eligible for parole. Life without the possibility of parole is only applicable in first-degree murder convictions. 

It appears that Michael will not see the light of day ever again because he will turn 80 when he will become entitled to parole. 

Although quite late, but justice did prevail in the Renee Pagel gruesome murder case. 

How was Renee Pagel murdered?

In August 2006, Renee was discovered in an extremely wounded state. All in all, she had fifty stab wounds on her delicate body. 

She died of multiple stab wounds to her head, face, and torso and also sustained defensive wounds to her hands.

Years after Renee Pagel murder, it was revealed that at the time of her death, the deceased was on bed rest as she was recovering from a major surgery. 

She had donated one of her kidney’s to a student’s father. 

Her divorce with Michael was finalized just a few weeks before her untimely demise. The ruling which triggered Michael to kill his wife was related to the former pair’s children custody. 

The court ruled in Renee’s favor, thereby giving her the custody of their children. 

When the authorities arrived at the crime scene soon after Renee’s father found his daughter brutally stabbed, they instantly suspected a break in. 

They thought that Renee got caught in a robbing incident. 

However, their suspicion turned to dust when they saw all the valuables present in the house were intact and there were no signs of a break-in. 

The detectives working on the case soon found out about Renee and her estranged husband Michael Pagel’s bitter divorce over custody of their children and over property and alimony. 

Unfortunately, due to a lack of evidence, the former husband was let go and the case went cold while the deceased victim’s three children moved in with their father.

It’s not known what the former pair’s children think of their father after this brutal reality was disclosed right in front of their eyes.

No matter what, the criminal is now behind bars and serving the sentence he deserved.
