Report: Matt Rhule Alleges Panthers Owe Him Around $5M in Severance in Lawsuit | News, Scores, Highlights, Stats, and Rumors
Daniel Santos Former Carolina Panthers head coach Matt Rhule was fired months ago, but he reportedly isn't going away quietly.
According to CBS Sports' Jonathan Jones, Rhule has filed an arbitration lawsuit against the Panthers alleging that the franchise has refused to pay him his severance compensation that is worth nearly $5 million.
Rhule, who was hired as the head coach of the Nebraska Cornhuskers in November, was fired after leading the Panthers to a 1-4 start to the 2022 season. Carolina went on to finish with a 7-10 record, winning four of its last six games under then-interim head coach Steve Wilks.
The Panthers had an 11-27 record in two-plus seasons under Rhule, who had made a name for himself as a college football coach with Temple and Baylor prior to making the leap to the NFL in 2020. Nebraska is hoping the 48-year-old will be able to find success once again, as he was signed to an eight-year contract that pays $74 million in base salary plus $4 million in deferred salary.
Per Jones, Carolina had hired Rhule on a seven-year contract worth more than $60 million with an annual base salary of $8.5 million through the 2026 season. While it wasn't reported how much he made in his brief tenure with the Panthers, he was owed $34 million in base salary between Feb. 1, 2023, and Jan. 31, 2027. Rhule's contract with Nebraska will pay him $29 million in base salary during that time, creating a difference of about $5 million between the two contracts.
Jones noted that the Panthers and the NFL declined to comment on the situation, and Rhule's attorney, John Singer, said, "We have no further comment."
