(Editor’s note: This story has been updated to clarify that Sherman was arrested in a domestic violence investigation not on charges of domestic violence.)

Free-agent cornerback Richard Sherman has been arrested in a domestic violence investigation in Seattle, according to police and public records.

He was booked for "burglary domestic violence" at 6:08 a.m. local time Wednesday at the King County Correctional Facility. Court records also say he was denied bail, which is standard practice until a suspect appears before a judge. He's expected to appear in court Thursday afternoon, according to a report in the Seattle Times.

At a news conference Wednesday afternoon, Redmond police chief Darrell Lowe said Sherman allegedly attempted to force entry into the residence of his wife's parents, and that the relationship between the parties is the cause for the domestic violence component of the investigation.

Lowe said Sherman did not gain entry to the residence and is not under suspicion of assault. Sherman was also booked for malicious mischief for allegedly causing damage to the door of the residence, Lowe said.

According to a release from Redmond Police, they were notified at 11:26 p.m. local time on Tuesday that Sherman was "possibly traveling to Redmond." Police said they were called to a residence at 1:49 a.m. local time Wednesday for a burglary in progress.

"Officers arrived and located Sherman outside the home," police said in the statement. "The suspect fought with officers while being taken into custody, resulting in a Redmond K9 team being deployed to assist in gaining control."

Lowe said at the news conference that Sherman and police officers spoke amicably for around 10 minutes, before he was told he would be arrested and began to walk away. He then allegedly resisted arrest, Lowe said, and Sherman and police sustained minor injuries as they deployed a K9 unit and put him into custody. Sherman was treated at a hospital for a minor laceration on his lower leg from the encounter with the dog, Lowe said, before he was taken to jail.

Washington State Patrol said they are also investigating Sherman for a possible hit and run and DUI, connected to an incident shortly before the altercation at the residence.

State patrol captain Ron Mead said at the news conference that a 911 call at 1:26 a.m. Wednesday reported a possible impaired driver had entered a closed construction zone on eastbound Highway 520 in Redmond. Mead said the vehicle appeared to hit a barrier leaving the construction zone and was heavily damaged on the driver's side when troopers found it abandoned near the highway.

Troopers began looking for the vehicle's owner, whom they identified as Sherman, and ended up at the same address as Redmond police and helped with Sherman's arrest.

State patrol obtained a warrant for a blood draw, the results of which were not immediately available. According to Mead and a press release, charges of hit and run and DUI are being recommended. Both are misdemeanors considering no one was hurt in the crash.

"At this time we’re going to make no statements, except he didn’t harm anybody," Sherman's wife Ashley Moss told the Seattle Times. "My kids were not harmed in the incident. He’s a good person and this is not his character. We’re doing all right, just trying to get him out. I want people to know no one was injured."

The NFL Players Association said it was "made aware of an arrest last night of one of our player leaders for an alleged domestic violence incident and have activated our domestic violence crisis protocol for the protection and support of everyone involved." Sherman is vice president of the NFLPA's executive board.

"We will continue to monitor events closely as more facts are made available to us," the NFLPA said.

NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy said the league "investigates any incident involving law enforcement, and if there is a violation of the personal conduct policy, the player would be facing discipline."

An arrest would not preclude Sherman from signing with another team, but if that were to happen, he could subsequently be placed on the league's commissioner's exempt list for the regular season.

Sherman, 33, spent the past three years with the San Francisco 49ers after playing his first seven seasons with the Seattle Seahawks. He has been selected to five Pro Bowls during his 10-year career.
