Samantha Schwartz's Women's Rowing Recruiting Profile
James Holden Personal Statement
Since I was little I have been very competitive. The first time I played goalie was in second grade. I fell in love with lacrosse and soon joined Gold Star, a newly-formed club team run by Kristen Igoe and Tanner Guarino and with a great goalie coach in Anne Versprille, who is the MIT head coach. While I was in lower school my junior Gold Star team struggled with winning, but we constantly pushed each other to improve. Now we have a strong team that is very good at communicating. I realized that one of my jobs as a goalie is to be loud for my defense and give them help in covering attackers.
As I have gotten older I have also realized that the hardest part of being a goalie is mental, I try to stay focused and keep a 0-0 mentality so after every goal, in my mind the score of the game is 0-0 again. I have realized that when I focus on the mental aspect and bring that to a practice or a game my overall play is stronger. Finally, I realize that improvement requires hard work and I try to benefit from every minute of every practice, which sometimes runs three hours on days when Gold Star has an hour of goalie practice before two-hour high school practices. I don’t care how hot it is or how bad the weather is unless I’m sick or out of town, I make every practice and every game. Every summer I attend goalie camps, like Bill Pilat or Peak, to try to improve my game.
I am currently coaching club lacrosse for Goldstar for girls 1-8 grade.
Academics are very important to me as well. I work hard to get As in every class and I hope to go into neuroscience after college.
I am so excited to bring my dedication, talent, and mental fortitude to the college and program that fits me best!
