Tiger Woods, son Charlie set to compete for PNC Championship title
Sophia Dalton ORLANDO, Fla. — Tiger and Charlie Woods will tee it up again this weekend at the PNC Championship, seeking to win the parent/child event for the first time. Here’s what you need to know:
- The duo are competing for the fourth time. Tiger and his son, who is 14 years old, had their best finish in 2021, finishing second to John Daly and his son, John Daly II.
- The threat of inclement weather has moved up the tee times for the first round, with the Woods teeing off with Justin Thomas and his father, Mike, at 8:22 a.m. ET.
What to know about Tiger’s game
Perhaps the most notable part of Friday’s pro-am round was that Tiger Woods walked all 18 holes. This event has relaxed rules, allowing for everyone from Thomas, 30, to Lee Trevino, 84, to compete, and Woods has taken a golf cart in the past. But while their amateur playing partners used carts to get around The Ritz-Carlton Golf Club, Tiger and Charlie walked.

“I felt like I was physically fit to do it, and also, walking is always better for my back. I just wanted to keep it loose and keep it going, and we’re just having so much fun, it doesn’t really matter. We had a good time doing it,” Tiger said.
Woods last played competitively at the Hero World Challenge from Nov. 30 to Dec. 3, shooting even par and finishing 18th in a 20-man field.
“Today was definitely a bit better,” Woods said. “I felt like I made some — I was able to knock a lot of the rust off there at Hero and felt — my hands felt better with control hitting shots, and especially today with the wind blowing as hard as it was, I was able to hit flighted shots nicely, which was not quite on par or as sharp as I wanted to be at Hero.”
What to know about Charlie’s game
Charlie Woods first appeared at this event as a precocious 11-year-old, and now he’s a teenager (and a high school state golf champion). Time … it passes. Charlie has grown four inches in the last year, Tiger said, and it was evident the effect it has had on the kid’s game. Charlie has moved back a set of tees this year, only one in front of dad. That adds some extra complexity to decisions during the 36-hole tournament, which are played under scramble rules.
“I think today on 10, 12, 13, I got one in play and he’s able to go for the green. I can’t get there. But you know, those are things that we have to make up on the fly because of the weather that’s coming in and how the golf course is going to play,” Tiger said.
There’s considerable energy spent on social media showing the similarities between father and son with a club in hand, which is not lost on Tiger.
“Things that drives me nuts, he drops his club on his follow-through and doesn’t watch where the golf ball goes. Granted, I’ve done that a lot throughout my career, so I — you know, it’s looking into a mirror, basically,” Tiger said.
