Roisin Scanlon, who still holds the record of being our youngest ever finalist, aged 12 in 2019, returned to the UK last week after recording one of her biggest wins at the Curry Cup final in San Francisco.

Backed by NBA superstar Steph Curry, the finals form part of the Underrated Golf Tour in the US which aims to provide “a safe, competitive environment for culturally diverse male and female junior golfers”.

Scanlon played in all four regional events in the near two-month tour and won the last two in Las Vegas and Washington to top the points leaderboard before winning the trophy in the 12-strong girls’ field to make it a hat-trick.

She also became the first female to have two wins in a season. “It was a huge highlight for me,” says Scanlon, who also won the Stephen Gallacher Foundation Classic in April.

“We had panels where we got to hear about Steph’s life and his college coach. Mariah Stackhouse and Lydia Ko [both LPGA pros] were also there and we could ask them any questions, any obstacles we have faced and could relate to what they’ve had previously. We were welcomed with open arms, and the course and weather were great.”

The Woburn-based junior now plays under the Irish Golf flag, courtesy of her athletic mother, who competed for Ireland in the triple jump.

Scanlon returned to the finals in Portugal last year but won’t be with us this year, having sacrificed playing in qualifying tournaments in the UK for glory Stateside. But she is thrilled for those who will be teeing it up at Quinta and will be following the competition from home.
