Villa Le Maschere, Tuscany, Italy
Ava Arnold If you’re in Tuscany only for Florence, then this hotel isn’t for you; the two-hour return journey will eat into your day – and your wallet. A taxi is about €80 (£70) each way. If, however, you’re here to enjoy its natural beauty, cuisine and more of its history, then hire a car and drive this way.
Castello del Trebbio, one of Italy’s longest-inhabited castles, is 19 miles away; Villa Medicea di Cafaggiolo, built for the Medicis in the 14th century, is less than three miles from the hotel; and the medieval towns of Firenzuola and Scarperia are 16 miles and seven miles away respectively. Sporty types can walk to Lake Bilancino in 15 minutes for windsurfing, canoeing and kayaking – or explore unspoilt Mugello on foot, bike or horse. One of Tuscany’s best golf courses, Poggio dei Medici, is six miles away. For restaurants, try Ristorante Enoteca Le Maschere, which is across the road, and Rivasud, which is five minutes away by car.
