One of the most and well-loved gospel groups in country music is the Hee Haw Gospel Quartet. Known for rendering classic and contemporary gospel hymns alike, the quartet did not fail to impress the Hee Haw audience with their singing. More than that, watching the group perform makes us feel like going to church with their heavenly and God-given vocals.

One of the Hee Haw Gospel Quartet’s most notable renditions was the 19th-century gospel, “Where the Soul Never Dies.” The four members, Buck Owens, Roy Clark, Grandpa Jones, and Kenny Price, simply sang their hearts out. Again, apart from singing the hymn in the best way possible, the group has praised the Lord through a loved gospel tune.

The Song: “Where the Soul Never Dies”

“Where the Soul Never Dies” is a gospel song that describes the blessings of heaven where there will be no more death, sorrow or crying. Music composer and lyricist William Matthew Golden conceived the text and composed its wonderful tune.

Little is known about the exact date of writing and publishing the song, which is believed to be in the 19th century. Golden produced most of his songs while serving an eight-year sentence in a state penitentiary.

In 1914, he got a copyright of “Where the Soul Never Dies” and soon, it appeared in the Calvary Hymns edited and published by  R. H. Cornelius of Ft. Worth, Texas in 1915. Also, it was included in the 1922 Songs of the Coming King: The Message Due The World, compiled by Robert E. Winsett in Ft. Smith, Arkansas.

Unfortunately, Golden died on May 13, 1934, in a traffic accident in Europa, Massachusetts. He was then buried at Spring Valley Cemetery South in Webster County, Massachusetts. In 1942, Winsett renewed the copyright of “Where the Soul Never Dies,” which was later owned by the editor and publisher of Sacred Selections for the Church, Ellis J. Crum.
