Hulu’s sequel to the well-loved sitcom, How I Met Your Mother, may not be receiving ideal reviews, but fans are intrigued by Chris Lowell’s character in the sequel series.

In the original, Josh Randor’s Ted Mosby recounts the story of how he met his wife to his two children, and the show recalls the story through flashbacks to look back at the adventures along the way.

In the sequel series, Sex and the City’s Kim Cattrall plays the older version of Hillary Duff’s Sophie, who recalls the story of how she met her son’s father.

Lowell plays Jesse on How I Met Your Father, a cynical aspiring musician struggling to make ends meet by working as an uber driver.

Much like the original, fans have to guess the man Sophie eventually picks as her future son’s father.

Of the main cast, three men make the cut – Tom Ainsley’s Charlie, Suraj Sharma’s Sid, and Lowell’s Jesse.

While the pilot does not lean in anyone’s favor, it is likely the father ends up being someone outside the central circle like HIMYM’s Tracy was.

Despite this being Lowell’s first role as a series regular, he has been involved with a multitude of award-winning projects in the past.

Lowell was born in Atlanta, Georgia, where he developed a keen interest in the world of filmmaking and the theatre while at high school.

After enrolling in the University of Southern California, Lowell turned his attention towards bean volleyball while pondering a future in the film industry.

He auditioned for the role of Jonathan Fields on Life As We Know It in 2003, the short-lived ABC teen drama about an ice hockey player dealing with the emotional fallout of his parent’s divorce.

Lowell’s first lead role came three years later in the coming-of-age film, Graduation. He also starred in You Are Here.

In July 2021, Lowell revealed that his longtime girlfriend Kerry Bishe had given birth to the couple’s first child.

Chris Lowell’s Major TV and Film Roles

He gained a significant amount of fame after being cast as Stosh “Piz” Piznarski in season 3 of Veronica Mars, playing the sweet and genuine love interest to Kristen Bell’s Veronica.

Piz, a radio DJ and roommate to the character of Wallace, was one of the most beloved characters on the show, and fans spent the majority of the show’s run cheering him on after becoming a friend and partner to Veronica as she solved crimes. 

Although the two characters eventually get together, Veronica breaks things off in the film to focus on solving mysteries and reconnect with Logan.

Lowell’s next prominent role was in the medical drama Private Practice, starring alongside Kate Walsh, Tim Daly, and Audra McDonald.

In Private Practice, Lowell played the role of Dell, the receptionist for the Oceanside Wellness Group. His character was also a nurse, midwife-in-training, and had a six-year-old daughter to look after.

Lowell played Dell from 2007 to 2010, leaving the show during its season 3 finale. The show killed off the character during a complication that arose from his post-accident brain surgery to justify his exit.

Speaking about his character’s demise, Lowell admitted that the plot point was a morbid acting achievement.

“I knew I really wanted [Dell] to die because [I’d] never been killed on a show before, so I wanted to experience that,” Lowell said.  

His next major film role was as Stuart Whitworth in the film adaptation of the 2009 novel, The Help. Lowell then followed this up with his directorial debut entitled Besides Still Waters.

The film, set in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, follows a young man seeking to redefine his view on life after the untimely death of his parents.

Most recently, he was seen on the Netflix drama series G.L.O.W, playing Sebastian “Bash” Howard – a financier, commentator, ring announcer, and producer on the ladies’ wrestling show.

The character was loosely based on the actual wrestling producer David McClane of the 1980s. 

Although he eventually got the part, Lowell said his audition was “the single worse audition in the history of auditions.”

Most recently, Lowell was back on the big screen as the sleazy Al Monroe, the attacker of the friend Carey Mulligan’s character, gets revenge for in Promising Young Woman.

Lowell earned rave reviews for his ability to go against type, and his turn as the despicable abuser signalled a shift into more dramatic roles for the actor.

His Role in How I Met Your Father

Lowell feels he has much to offer in the sequel series now that he has made a return to television.

His character, Jesse, is a wannabe musician working as an uber driver after his rejected marriage proposal went viral on social media.

Now embarrassed and refusing to believe in true love, his views on romance constantly clash with those of Sophie’s, who cannot help but be a hopeless romantic.

Although the series is still in its very early days, fans could not help but notice a spark between the two characters – placing Jesse as the lead contender for the titular father of the series.

Lowell claims he has no idea who the father will be, having not been told the ending of the show.

“With our show, there’s this constant opportunity and excitement about trying to deduce who of these very select few people it can possibly be.” 

He notes that in HIMYM, “Every guest star that we [met], there [was] this assumption that this could be that person and as a result, you sort of [were] trying to get invested in characters that all of a sudden we never [saw] again.”

Lowell also revealed that Jesse and Sophie have an exciting road ahead, hinting at a series of interesting shifts in their relationship.

He warns fans not to expect him to give the ultimate reveal of the show away, saying:

“I didn’t waste my time asking [the writers] because why would they tell me?” he says. “I have a terrible poker face. If I knew, you would know by now.”
