Lizzie Velásquez was born with Marfanoid–progeroid–lipodystrophy syndrome, a rare congenital illness that stops her from gaining weight and developing body fat, among other symptoms.

It may be a sort of newborn progeroid syndrome (NPS) (Wiedemann-Rautenstrauch syndrome), which doesn’t impair Velásquez’s healthy bones, organs, or teeth, according to medical researchers at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center.

Velásquez is unable to acquire weight due to her unusual disease, which is a defining feature of her condition. 

Her weight does not exceed 29 kgs, and her boy fat happens to be less than 1 percent. 

She also has to eat a lot of little meals and snacks throughout the day, approximately 5,000 to 8,000 calories per day.

Around 2015, it was discovered that Velásquez and another woman named Abby Solomon, who suffers from a similar but less severe form of the disease, both have mutations in the FBN1 gene.

This codes for the proprotein of the novel hormone asprosin, and this mutation causes asprosin deficiency, which is the cause of their symptoms.

Marfan–progeroid–lipodystrophy syndrome, or simply Marfan lipodystrophy syndrome, is the medical term for this illness.

Velásquez had spoken out against bullying since she was named the “World’s Ugliest Woman” in a video broadcast on YouTube in 2006 when she was 17 years old. 

Her YouTube videos have had over 54 million views, and she gave a TEDxAustinWomen Talk titled “How Do YOU Define Yourself” in January 2014. 

She conducted a social media challenge for Bystander Revolution’s Month of Action in 2015 during National Bullying Prevention Month. 

Her first book, which she co-wrote with her mother, Rita, was a self-published autobiography that was published in English and Spanish in 2010.

“Lizzie Beautiful” The Lizzie Velásquez Story includes letters Velásquez’s mother wrote to her when she was a child.

She is Appreciated for her positivity during her bullying and for being a ray of hope for others. 

Velásquez has also written two novels for children, both of which include personal experiences and guidance. 

Be Attractive, Be You (2012) chronicles her quest “to uncover what genuinely makes us beautiful” and advises people to appreciate their own “unique abilities and benefits.” Sé belle, sé tu misma is the Spanish title for the book (2013).

Choosing Happiness (2014), another book by Velásquez discusses some of the challenges she has faced and how she “discovered the value of choosing to be joyful when it’s all too easy to give up.” 

Liguori Publications, a Redemptorist publishing business, published both volumes.

Dare to Be Kind, first published in 2017, is on the value of being kind, based on her personal and online experiences with bullying. 

On March 14, 2015, A Brave Heart: The Lizzie Velásquez Story, a documentary film, premiered at SXSW.

On October 17, 2016, Lifetime aired the film.

Since April 2017, Velásquez has starred in her own Fullscreen original series, Unzipped.

Bullied Online; Named The Most Ugliest Person In The World

When Lizzie Velasquez was 17, she came upon a video of herself branded “the ugliest lady in the world.”

Motivated by taunts about her physical appearance, the motivational speaker and anti-bullying activist has dedicated her life to discussing her exceedingly rare genetic disease.

Despite ingesting a phenomenal 6000 calories every day, the 28-year-old can’t gain weight and has never weighed more than 29kg. Her right eye, which began to cloud over when she was four years old, is blind, and her left eye is vision impaired.

She’s used the hate to inspire millions of others to fight back against bullies in the ten years since.

She’s become a famous motivational speaker, has her own YouTube channel, is working on her fourth book, and is the subject of a Lifetime documentary titled “A Brave Heart: The Lizzie Velasquez Story,” which premieres Monday.

When the assistant principle of her Austin, Texas, high school asked her to relate her tale to 400 ninth-grade students a year later, she made her first motivational speech.

Velasquez was initially concerned that no one would be able to relate to her, but it was evident to her onstage that the other teenagers shared her narrative.

Velasquez then gave a TED presentation, with roughly 11 million people tuning in to hear her tale. For this anti-bullying activist, there has been no turning back.

She hopes that by working together, girls everywhere will feel less alone, which is why she’s collaborating with Secret this October in recognition of National Bully Prevention Month.

Throughout the month, the deodorant brand has encouraged women and girls to use the hashtag #StandUpWithSecret to publish an anti-bullying pledge on social media.
